We All Want to do Something Great

November 28, 2017

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” Luke1:30-32. ESV

At the end of my life I want to look back and say I accomplished all that God had for me to accomplish. I want to know that I took the talents given to me and fulfilled my assignment (Matthew 25).

We normally reference the story in Luke 1 as a Christmas story. While it is fitting this time of year, we can apply the lesson all year long. You see, Mary was just a teenager who found favor in the sight of the Lord by simply being faithful where she was planted. I love her response to the news the angel gave her in Luke 1:38 – “Behold I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. She simply said yes! Think about the responsibility of raising the Son of Almighty God, the Savior of the world! In the words of Marty McFly, “Whoa this is heavy!” Her yes changed history!

In the eyes of heaven, the most successful people aren’t always the ones who make millions of dollars or achieve some great feat. From heaven’s perspective, the truly great people are the ones who said yes decades ago and are still faithful, even if everyone has given up and no longer believe. They stay planted like mighty oaks believing the word of the Lord will come to pass and that He that began a good work will bring it to completion. It’s like the man who took the five talents he was given and produced five more! It’s not about what you’re given, it’s about what you do with it!

So how do we do something great? We stay faithful to the call and keep the yes in our hearts louder than anything else.

Pastor Matt grew up singing in his home church. He encountered God at the age of 19 and was radically changed forever. He has a strong call to lead worship and is extremely passionate about seeing people encounter Jesus.

Matt serves as worship and youth pastor at Cornerstone Christian Church in Sparks. He is married to Nicole Smith and has two children, Judah and Ava. He enjoys spending time with his family.
