Experience His Voice, not the Idols of Replication

Deuteronomy 4:2

“Do not add to or subtract from… just obey the commands of the Lord.”

In Deuteronomy 4, Moses is collecting his thoughts and sharing his final messages with the people of Israel before he was to pass away. One could view it as a “shot in the arm” or one last reminder for them to stay the course.

In reading Deuteronomy 4:2, I thought about how as modern Christians, we can sometimes make the Word of Lord so complicated. This verse reminds me to keep the Gospel as is, simple.

Don’t add to or subtract from, just do it!

Also in the fourth chapter of Deuteronomy, Moses references Numbers 25 where God killed all the Israelites who worshiped Baal, the god of Peor. Do you remember why God did this? He had instructed the Israelites to not worship idols, no different than you or me today. God was a jealous God and punished the children of Israel for their deeds. We quote Hebrews 13:8 often saying, “Jesus Christ (God) is the same yesterday, today, and forever more,” so we know that God is a jealous God today just as then. Now we’re covered by the Blood of Christ and His finished work of the cross and live under grace, but God is still jealous and wishes for no idols to come between us and Him.

In fact, if you look in Deuteronomy 4:15, Moses references the day God spoke from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai. If you remember, the people of Israel HEARD God’s voice, but God didn’t reveal his face to them. Moses is warning the Israelites to not attempt to make any idols fashioned after even their God. Why do you think God did this?

I can just hear God speaking to Moses something to the effect of, “Moses, don’t attempt to replicate what you perceived of my form when you’ve experienced me. Don’t try to put me in a box of who I am. It’s my desire for each generation and each person to experience my voice on a personal level.”

I encourage you to take time this week and examine your heart. Do you have any idols between you and the Lord? Don’t complicate the Gospel! Love the Lord with all your heart and press into His Presence so you can experience Him for yourself. Listen for His voice, and don’t settle for religion’s attempt to provide replications of what they perceive Him to be!
